A Spark of New Knowledge: The First Quarter

It’s almost eight weeks and the first quarter at Ilocos Sur National High School is almost over. These eight weeks have been challenging and I can assure the following quarters will be as challenging as this quarter. I have learned a lot from every subject and I have also enjoyed all the online classes I have attended. It was a bit fun but it also made me nervous to the point both of my hands and feet gets cold. Our main topic for today’s blog is about how much I’ve learned this quarter, the challenges and problems I had to face and how I managed to get through them in our subject called Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

ICT is a fun subject to learn, I have discovered and gained many information and knowledge about it. The internet timeline was an interesting topic to start off the first quarter, I have learned that the Internet is first conceived in the early ‘60s under the leadership of the Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Project Agency and in March 1994 was when the Philippines was connected to the internet. I further understood that the web page is a document where the web information is stored; the web servers are the computers where the web pages’ files are stores; and the web clients are the computers reading the web pages. The page address is contained in the HTTP request. The Uniform Resource Locator or more known as the UR is located on the address bar which simply directs you to the location of a file or webpage. I learned that the domain name pinpoints the location of a webpage or file on the web. The levels of domain name are: 3rd level domain wherein it helps the server locate the address on the internet by narrowing it down to the World Wide Web (www); 2nd level domain tells the web name of the entity you want to locate; and the top level domain (TLD) is the suffix or a web address, it indicates the type of entity to which web site belongs, for example is .gov, .edu, .org, .com and many more.

In the second lesson entitled “I love the internet”, I have learned some of the internet services and tools, such as the electronic mail or e-mail, which is a faster way to communicate with others and sending and receiving messages to and from any recipients and other more internet tools and services like Information Publishing and Research, Long-distance Computing, Discussion Groups or ‘newsgroups’, Internet Voice, the World Wide Web and the Wide-Area Information Services (WAIS). I also found out about the types of data which are text files, graphic files (GIF, JPEG, BMP), sound files (WAV, AIFF, AU) and video and animation (MPEG, MOV).

The third lesson for me was a lot of fun, I further understood the different types of blogs and the activities are also fun like making blogs which what we are doing right now. Blogs are also called web log, wherein it is usually managed by an individual, their blog are usually commentary, descriptive or other material such as graphics and videos. The types of blogs are personal blogs, corporate blogs, question blogging, video blogging, photoblog, linklog, MP3 blog, and phlog. Blogs can also be defined depending in the type of device that is being used. Mobile blogging is a form of blogging that the entries are from a mobile phone or other mobile devices. Blogs can also focus on a particular subject or genre (travel blogs, fashion blogs, cooking blogs, etc.). I also learned a new term which I honestly never heard of it before, which is a community of all blogs.

The following lesson taught me how to create a blog account in www.blogger.com. I also learned about the blog structure, the layout, parts and the structure of a blog. The lesson also made me recall the importance of citing the sources and other materials you used in your blog as well as information in plagiarism.

The fifth lesson made me learn things about client-server computing, the World Wide Web, Web Server Software, Web Server Hardware, Web Information Architecture, web browsers or web clients, web servers and browse interaction. I also got to recall the parts of a web browser, the URL and the domain name system.

I find lesson six to be really helpful for me in using search engines like Google. This lesson further teaches me about using search engines and combining search terms. This is very useful so I can easily find sites and sources from the internet faster. I have learned the phrase searching, Boolean logic, pseudo-Boolean logic and term weighing. I have further understanding in using synonyms, homonyms and truncation in using search engines as well.

From lessons seven and eight, I have learned a lot about the internet access, the local area networks and wireless broadband access. I have discovered the meanings of data rate units, which is the average number of bits, characters or blocks per unit time passing between equipment in a data transmission system. The ISQ symbols for the bit and byte are bit and B, one byte consists of 8 bits and is synonymous with the unit octet. I learned that the binary prefixes were introduced in 1998 by the International Electrotechnial Commission (IEC) and in IEEE 1541-2002 and was reaffirmed on March 27, 2008. I found out that a bandwidth measures how much data is being transmitted to a specific connection in a given amount of time. It also refers to a range of frequencies used to transmit a signal. Bandwidth is measured in hertz and often referenced in signal processing applications.

The problems I encountered while answering the modules and studying the lessons is that the fact I am self-learning, I am not familiar with most of the terms in the LAS and I’ve only encountered some terms for the first time. Some of the instructions are confusing but I manage to understand them after some time. I managed to get over these problems and challenges thanks to out subject teacher commencing online classes, she also replies and explains instructions and the lessons clearly if we are confused. I also get help by the internet and my friends.

Moving on, I will continue studying hard and try my best to understand the lessons of ICT, it’s not as hard as other subjects. There might be some terms of parts of a lesson I don’t get much but at least I try to understand the lessons. I will continue my hard work throughout the whole school year and pass with good grades. I have gained a spark of new knowledge in the first quarter of tenth grade.
